Painting a Vaulted Kitchen and Living Space

Vaulted ceilings make a room feel open and bright, but they're also one of the hardest spaces to paint well. This Bloomington-area home had a big open kitchen, dining and living area with a tall vaulted ceiling, skylights and wood accents, all in one connected space.

Protecting everything first

With a finished kitchen and wood floors in the room, protection was the first step. We masked off the cabinets, appliances, countertops and floors and covered the furniture before any painting started.

It takes time, but it's what lets us paint confidently without worrying about drips or overspray on things that are expensive to replace.

Working at height

Tall walls and sloped ceilings need the right ladders and setup to reach safely and evenly. The goal is a uniform finish from the floor to the peak, with no lap marks or uneven patches where the light from the skylights hits.

We also cut clean lines along the skylights, the beams and the wood accent wall so every edge looks sharp.

The finished space

The bright white walls and ceiling make the wood floors, table and accent wall stand out, and the whole space feels even bigger with the natural light from the skylights.

Tips for painting high ceilings

• Use a flat or matte finish on ceilings to hide small imperfections.
• Pick a color that works with the light. Skylights and big windows change how a color looks during the day.
• Unless you have the right equipment and experience, high ceilings are worth leaving to a pro for safety.
